Measure supplier performance against agreed commitments and reliable evidence. A fair scorecard distinguishes what the supplier controlled from external events while still showing the impact on your customer and the quality of the supplier’s response.
What matters
Choose a manageable set of measures, such as on-time collection, on-time delivery, document accuracy and responsiveness. Define the promised date, permitted exceptions and evidence source before reporting a percentage. Compare similar services rather than mixing very different lanes without context.
Review misses individually. Record whether the problem arose from supplier performance, late customer instructions, authority action or another cause. The cause does not erase the impact, but it changes the corrective action that will help.
Discuss recurring issues with the supplier and agree measurable improvements. Balance service results with cost and communication quality when allocating future work. A single score should support a decision, not conceal the operational detail behind it.
A common mistake
Publishing a ranking based on inconsistent timestamps or a tiny sample without explaining the limitations.
Should the cheapest supplier receive the most work?
Only if its overall service, reliability and risk fit the requirement. Price alone does not measure performance.
