Apply for an ATA Carnet by checking that the destination, goods and intended use are eligible, then submitting an accurate goods list and itinerary to an authorized issuing chamber. Plan the return movement as carefully as the outward trip.
What matters
Explain what the equipment will be used for, which countries it will enter or transit, and when it will return. Acceptance can depend on the category of use, not only whether a country participates in the carnet system. A carnet does not remove applicable licensing controls.
Prepare detailed item descriptions, identifying numbers, quantities and values. Give the chamber the holder and representative information it needs and confirm its security or guarantee arrangements. Check whether the route requires paper or digital handling and how customs validation will be completed.
Before departure, brief the carrier or travelling representative on presenting the goods and carnet at the relevant customs movements. Agree who will monitor return deadlines and retain the validation records.
A common mistake
Booking the movement before confirming carnet eligibility, issuance timing and the security arrangement required by the chamber.
Does ordinary cargo insurance automatically cover carnet security?
No. Confirm the chamber’s accepted security arrangement separately; cargo insurance and customs security serve different purposes.
